Described by Robert Sherman of the New York Times as a "poet of the piano," Charlie regularly performs all genres of classical music from Bach to Beethoven, and Chopin to Janácek. Since his orchestral debut at the age of 9, he has performed or competed throughout the United States, as well as in France, Australia, Norway, and Portugal. Charlie also plays chamber music regularly, including three times with cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

In addition to classical music, Charlie often performs modern improvisations. Being able to play by ear as well as from written music, he often improvises new themes and those from popular genres.
